CSP 6010 with Mike Coomes- Fall 2014

Issue Paper #3
Law, Policy, and Governance

Category: Foundational

Activities:

  • “Describe the governance systems at one’s institution including the governance structures for faculty, student affairs professionals, staff, and students” (p. 22)

    • Due to the political aspect of my assistantship and my proximity to several different governing bodies, I have learned more about this during the past two years.  Serving as an informal liason to the Board of Trustees at my undergrad set the stage for this, but I have learned so much more since working closely with the student trustees, undergraduate student government, graduate student senate, faculty staff council, and classified staff council at BGSU.  Participating in the selection committee for the graduate student trustee allowed me to understand how the structures work together to govern the institution.

  • “Act in accordance with national, state/ provincial, and local laws and with institutional policies regarding non-discrimination” (p. 22)

    • For CSP 6010, I wrote a paper on policies that govern admission of transgender individuals on single-sex campuses. Through this paper I learned more about current legal cases that exist around this issue and how they are affecting the rights of transgender students on campuses.  I also wrote another issue paper around the issues of affirmative action and learned more about the state and national non-discrimination and how they weave with policies of affirmative action.
